Comic 83: Let's Play: Trademarks

Lately, Sony have been trying to trademark the term "Let's Play". And this request recently got denied... but not for the obvious reason of "of course you can't trademark such a generic term for a type of video are you serious", but because the trademark was too similar to a company named "Let'z Play of America".

It is business for the copyright institution or whatever as well.
I like how they will not comment why they wanted to do it. The reason is obvious and I expect them to later say it was to "support" content creators somehow.
We had Nintendo, now Sony so inb4 MS "playthrough" copyright :D

Yes, exactly... Not saying anything just makes it seem like they got something to hide, in this case...

ANd yeah, trademarks and copyright can get ridiculous

Several things wrong with this. Not the page, the situation. :)

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 12:06 AM

Indeed... The things companies try getting away with...

by ProfEtheric at 1st Feb 2016, 12:24 AM

I wonder if he got the idea from the Namco fiasco.

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 12:30 AM

Heh, wouldn't surprise me...

by azureXtwilight at 1st Feb 2016, 12:37 AM

I'm so happy Sony didn't manage to trademark it...

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 12:47 AM

Yeah, I think we all are...

by NeilKapit at 1st Feb 2016, 12:49 AM

I'm surprised they hadn't tried to copyright the very word "play"

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 12:52 AM

Yeah, or "game"

by junoro at 1st Feb 2016, 1:26 AM

I like that perspective in the first panel! The whole copyright thing reminds me of how Disney tried to copyright the Day of the Dead. It's like a company trying to copyright Halloween! Facebook tried to copyright the word 'face' once too, I think!

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 2:09 AM

And yeah, it's ridiculous what companies try to copyright/trademark... Remember King trying to trademark "candy" and "saga"?

by Miaubol at 1st Feb 2016, 2:20 PM

This copyright/trademark/patent stuff is indeed scarily absurd some times, and no loner protects just harms creators. D:

I'm pretty sure someone tried to trademark "game over" as well.

by Zanreo at 1st Feb 2016, 3:23 PM

And what, trademark "game over"? Well, it wouldn't surprise me at this point...

by Miaubol at 1st Feb 2016, 9:59 PM

It would rather surprise me if nobody has tried it ...

I'm playing the world's smallest violin over here.

by Zanreo at 4th Feb 2016, 3:31 AM

Yeah, me too...

by Therazan at 29th Feb 2016, 4:47 PM

I believe (I *need* to believe) it's actually the trademark guys playing it smart.

The reason "It's too generic"or anything like that might be easy to contest and overrule, I suppose. In a way, it's "just" an opinion.

But if they say "Such a trademark already exist", their decision holds more weight.

by Zanreo at 29th Feb 2016, 6:51 PM

Well, that's also a possibility...
