Comic 80: Console Boxart

At one point, Sega released a limited-edition Dreamcast... with their Senior Managing Director at the time, Hidekazu Yukawa. He had a rather memetic fame among Japanese Sega gamers during that time, appearing in lots of Dreamcast commercials... this boxart is kind of the equivalent of Nintendo releasing a special Reggie-branded Wii U. Here you can see a collection of commercials!

Anyway, this is probably my favorite game console box of all time. xD Also, sadly this drawing doesn't portray the N64 box in its proper trippy glory...

I like your version of the box better. Lol. X)

I can't believe that was a thing. I learned something today! :D

You know, between this and Segagaga, I'm almost wondering if Sega knew the Dreamcast was gonna fail horribly, and decided "well, if we're gonna fail like this... let's at least have lots of fun while doing so!"

by azureXtwilight at 9th Jan 2016, 5:12 PM

I actually googled the stuff XD Holy crap that was horrible!

by Zanreo at 9th Jan 2016, 5:16 PM

Haha! Horribly amazing, you mean? x3

by ProfEtheric at 9th Jan 2016, 5:57 PM

Wow. It's hard to believe that was a thing...

Of course, these bits of video game history are one of the reasons I love your comic. :)

It's surprising just what you can find :D

And thanks! :D

Yukawa also appears at the end of the What's Shenmue? demo disc that came with the system later on.

Also, I'd pay top dollar for a Reggie/Iwata edition NX if that ever happens. XP

by Zanreo at 9th Jan 2016, 10:07 PM

Yup, I know :D

And me too, haha xD I wouldn't be too surprised to see that happen, actually...

Not just boxes, but aesthetics in general. Nintendo's hardware has the most personality, with its candy colored shells and bizarre forms, and while they've turned it down a notch in packaging as well as hardware since the Wii/DS generation, they still go for a toyetic aesthetic. Sony's systems have all been flat black monoliths since the PS2, and Microsoft doesn't seem to know of any colors besides green (which, when mixed with black like it often is, creates an uncomfortably radioactive aesthetic). And as for Sega...well, much like their consoles themselves, they lapsed into a "do random crap until something sticks" aesthetic, making the Dreamcast's downward spiral logo appropriate.

by Zanreo at 10th Jan 2016, 2:30 AM

Hm, you're on to something there, yeah...
(And about the green Xbox logo, I read about the reason it's green when reading up on some history... Definitely gonna use that in a story)

Looking forward to it!

XBox green often reminds me of computer displays from the 70s & 80s. Some of the earliest ones were white or electric blue, but people got eyestrain from them. Green and amber were found to be the best colors for minimizing eyestrain, and green on black became *the* color of awesomely exciting computer displays in awesomely exciting TV shows when I was a little kid. ;) I recently bought XBox slippers solely because the graphic on them looks like it was made on a Tektronix 4010.

Y'know, I don't think I've ever paid a lick of attention to a console's box art. I was too excited about opening the box to get what was inside.

by Zanreo at 10th Jan 2016, 3:38 PM

Haha, yeah, in the end that's what counts... Still, it's kinda fun to look at the various design choices

by junoro at 12th Jan 2016, 8:22 PM

Oh my goodness. Did that ever happen in North America, too? I feel like if they made a Reggie wii u one, they would include an amiibo, or at least put him in a new Smash in the bundle, hehehe

by Zanreo at 14th Jan 2016, 3:01 AM

This was a Japan-only one....
And yeah, they would, haha :D "My amiibo is ready!"
