Comic 75: DoA: Xcuses

(Was going to get this out earlier, but school took away a lot of my time...)
(Also, yay new character! Koei Tecmo is a merge of Koei and Tecmo, and a master of strategy. Those are the logos of Omega Force and Team Ninja, devs of the Warriors series and Ninja Gaiden/DoA, respectively, and subsidiaries of KT)
So, some weeks back, the Dead or Alive Xtreme series (the volleyball fanservice spinoff of the main DoA fighting series) got more attention than it's had in many years due to some comments from a community manager. Soon, the word spread about how the horrible feminist SJWs had succeeded in banning a game just because it contained boobs... even though there had actually been no attempts to get this game (or... any game, really) banned before or after this happened. So, they're basically fighting back against an "enemy" who didn't start a fight in the first place... Also, this alone being the only reason not to localize a game? ...I'm not really buying it. If it would have made you decent money, surely you can handle some critizism as a creator? Because going by past examples, some angry articles are really the most you can expect.
(As for Play-Asia? Well... they just saw the perfect chance to stir up some shit for attention and they took it.)

(Koei Tecmo had also stated earlier that "if there's enough demand, we'll bring the game over"... and apparently, there wasn't, because most people doesn't really care about DoA anymore except for the fanbase. Especially considering the high prices the new games are going for in Japan, made higher by the currently weak yen. Anyone who really wants the game can still import it, after all... for the extreme prices they're going for in Japan.)

As for me? I don't really care one way or another if this game gets localized or not, or if it exists at all. It's not something I would play myself (jiggle physics or not - I have no interest in volleyball games either way) but I don't have a problem with it existing or if it got released here. I also don't have a problem with people critizising it. When it comes to localizations... I prefer to focus my energy on the games I care about myself. (Give me Rhythm Heaven 3DS already!)

This is almost as dirty as Namco's patent... almost.

It's getting harder and harder to find a game company to actually get behind...

by Zanreo at 5th Dec 2015, 11:51 AM

Yeah, I have much less respect for them after this excuse than what I would have if they did release it...

by Miaubol at 5th Dec 2015, 12:45 PM

Ahh, I see, playing the victim card.. D:

Oh yeah, this. I usually avoid such noise because there are problems on every side.
It came out of nowhere and I do not remember anyone complaining.
The community created such a state in the past two years that it is becoming profitable to use various sub-groups and scandals.

Also... Come on. NOBODY plays the game for volleyball in the first place so what is the problem :D

by Zanreo at 5th Dec 2015, 8:34 PM

Yeah... It's just a huge mess all around. It's just really annoying to see...

And to put it this way: I have less of an issue with shameless fanservice like this that isn't trying to be much else, than I have with unneccessarily sexualized characters and scenes in otherwise good games, and all the excuses for it ("Oh, but this strong female warrior character CHOOSES to fight in bikini armor because she's proud of her body and likes to dress like that! Also it's doesn't have to be realistic even though all the male characters have fully covering armor." "She breathes through her skin!" ect) Like, it's ok, developers. You can admit you wanted to see boobs.

by MadJak91 at 5th Dec 2015, 8:40 PM

"She breathes through her skin!"

lmao, I laughed at that one a great deal. It just sounds hilarious.
OK but then I do not understand why she has to make those suggestive poses. Oh, I DO understand but from the game perspective I mean.
And the full combat suit unlock disapproves the whole thing anyway.

Hey, if anybody wants this heinous thing, send me a PM and maybe I'll pick up another copy while I'm in Akihabara tomorrow. :>

by Zanreo at 6th Dec 2015, 5:26 AM

Hey, might as well get it from Everywhere But Play-Asia at this point

by junoro at 5th Dec 2015, 6:18 PM

Eww really? That's so messed up! I guess there's no way to generate buzz than by controversy, but STILL.

by Zanreo at 6th Dec 2015, 5:26 AM

Yep. it's either that, or the developers being unable to handle any critizism at all (at most, they would get... some angry articles?)

I can feel reasonably not dirty playing DOA because it passes the Bechdel Test thoroughly, the characters have distinct and defined personalities, there is a story that scratches my itch for ridiculous anime melodrama, and the gameplay itself is fun with a simple yet elegant strikes/holds/throws system and a lot of content. There's even been an effort to make the women less ridiculously sexualized, and while they still have massive gravity-defying breasts (though DOA5 started as an attempt to make them more realistically proportioned, which was dismissed long before the final version), they no longer have those anime blow-up doll faces. The same cannot be said for DOA XTreme Volleyball, which would basically amount to "Free Internet Ecchi Porn for $60" with a few mini-games tacked on.

by Zanreo at 6th Dec 2015, 5:38 AM

Yeah, they might both be "Dead or Alive", but there's a whole lot of difference between those two franchises...

by melaredblu at 6th Dec 2015, 6:04 AM

I've heard about this fakeroversy. It's amazing how much I don't care.
So much not caring.

by Zanreo at 6th Dec 2015, 6:07 AM

Yup, I can definitely understand that. Probably the best stance to take...

by azureXtwilight at 19th Dec 2015, 9:07 AM

Yep, that works.
