Comic 67: Vital Mistakes

are you completely sure there might not be any other reasons, sony
i mean, a certain other handheld seems to be doing ok

(Recently, the Sony Computer Entertainment boss said he wasn't sure about releasing a new handheld, because the "climate is not healthy" because of mobile games)

(And don't forget, the Q&A is still open for questions! Get those questions in! :D)

I really wanted to love the Vita, but for all the reasons you listed and more, I can see why it failed. Especially since the PSP is one of my favorite consoles ever, and while it didn't set the world on fire as the 21st Century Walkman like Sony wanted, it still sold a lot of games. They made a foothold into the portable games market, and they could've done a lot more to make the Vita the kind of device you'd want to carry with you. Of course, they did that with original games spanning a variety of different genres and utilizing production values light years ahead of anything portable games had previously seen. They probably could've done that with the Vita if they had more games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush. You gotta spend money to make money, as the saying goes...

Yeah, when I got my Vita it was because I found a sale where I got the memory card and a game along with the console (the game was Tearaway, by the way, a great game)
And I like it as a console for what it is, but... they really should have done more with it.

TL;DR if Sony doesn't act like they care about the Vita, how the hell could they ever expect anyone else to care?

by Zanreo at 29th Sep 2015, 7:48 AM

Yeah, if the company can't even believe in their own product, then who is going to? Not a good image

Apple in the background is so badass and evil.

by Zanreo at 29th Sep 2015, 5:04 AM

Yup, had fun drawing him :D That's definitely how Apple is seen by some...

Fake Consolers poster, Lir. Plz.

by AzellCriollo at 29th Sep 2015, 5:19 AM

Oh, Sony

You silly company you

by Zanreo at 29th Sep 2015, 5:57 AM

Yeah, he just doesn't seem to realize(want to admit) what actually went wrong...

They are sulking again.

Honestly, unlike PSP, Vita was kind of ill-fated.
PSP came as a portable system because we want to give you portable games the same way GBA/NDS does. Lot of games and stuff comparable to GBA/NDS.
Vita on the other hand seems like a push just to have something to compete against the 3DS.

Rushed release.
Not so good first party support (the hell?) and later acting like a baby waving arms and screaming: "Waaa! We are going 3rd party only!"
Which turned it into an indie machine. Indies are good and it was not a question of indies (even though many people are biased against them) but the simple fact that MOST indies can be found elsewhere. Sorry, I do not need a pricey handheld when I can get the indie game on Steam, PS3/4, 3DS, WiiU etc. etc. which most people own.
Now they are the angry baby again with this announcement.

I think Vita is a domino effect of bad decisions. No idea.
Objectively, I do not think MANY would miss it compared to a hypothetical missing PSP scenario.

Games, games and games. Not features, not power.
A lesson so hard to learn since the very beginning.

by Zanreo at 29th Sep 2015, 5:38 PM

Yeah, and I remember Vita was hyped as TOP SPECS and such... when people looking for that are more likely to stick with a home console that is going to have better specs than a handheld can possibly have anyway. Why not try for an actually good handheld experience instead of a smaller Playstation?

And yeah, first-party support is very important... even if your product doesn't do that well at first, you'll have to keep supporting it, or you'll just lose customer trust if you keep doing this again and again.

Yeah, Vita had been mainly indie and niche Japanese games (many of which I happen to like) and I mainly bought mine to play Danganronpa, haha. (Plus a few obscure Japanese rhythm games, yay for no region lock!)

And then they just dropped first-party game support and almost promoted it more as a PS4/PS3 screen or whatever... yeah, that's not what people are gonna buy it for. No matter what, games are the one most important thing for a system.

by MadJak91 at 29th Sep 2015, 5:49 PM

Oh, the screen...
Totally forgot about the last part of your comment.
Yes, that too.

Vita had been a mess of confused feelings from every possible direction unlike PSP or competing handhelds.

I doubt Sony is going to continue their handheld line. Who knows...

by junoro at 30th Sep 2015, 8:23 AM

Haha I love Nintendo's face in the last panel looking right at the reader like, "Do you see this? Yeah, Sony, that's TOTALLY why the Vita failed. Handhelds are DEFINITELY obsolete."

by Zanreo at 30th Sep 2015, 2:45 PM

Yeah, tried making her face all "...Really, dude? Come on now..."

While it is true that mobile gaming has taken a large chunk of the market, the Switch proves there’s still an audience for console quality games on the go, so long as it’s properly supported by the developer
