Comic 53: A Rare Opportunity - 4

found in Rare A Rare Opportunity - 4

Rare keeps releasing a lot of great N64 games... but how long will this last? After lots of success, he learns about the problems with executive meddling...

(Not 100% happy with this page... but I needed to get this out after the long wait. Been busy with exams and stuff...)

1. Great table flip! :)

2. It DOES seems that almost everything Nintendo does has to, if at all possible, be another installment in this or that series...

3. I'm not as intimately familiar with the Rare story as I was with Atari. I'm looking forward to seeing it! :)

1. Thanks! Been waiting the whole comic to draw that :D
2. Yeah, a lot of concepts turn into something in an existing series... good thing they sometimes make new stuff too (like Splatoon)
3. Thanks!

by ProfEtheric at 8th Jun 2015, 5:36 PM

I'm sure as the years go by, I'm sure we'll see more and more Splatoon stuff...

How long before Splatoon is part of Smash Bros?

by Zanreo at 8th Jun 2015, 5:52 PM

Well, seeing how things are now it would be possible to get DLC later on (and I bet they're gonna be a popular vote in the Smash Bros character poll...) If not in the current game, I bet we'll see Inklings in the next Smash Bros game.

And I'm looking forwards to see more Splatoon! While new series are great, I also love to see more of my favorite game worlds :D

You actually used that table flipping smiley as an effect. 10/10
OK, I am lacking here. Is that about the famous N64 Star Fox game or something else? Because that was a good thing, no?

by Zanreo at 8th Jun 2015, 5:24 PM

Indeed I did, thanks!

And it's about Star Fox Adventures for Gamecube, which was originally meant as a N64 game called Dinosaur Planet (Rare's original IP) released during N64s last years, but Miyamoto asked them to make it into a Star Fox game for the Gamecube instead.
While Adventures turned out decent as a game (or so I've heard, never actually played it) it didn't feel like a "Star Fox" game to many Star Fox fans, and others didn't like how Rare "lost" their original series and concept (I do wonder what the original Dinosaur Planet idea would have been like...)

by MadJak91 at 8th Jun 2015, 6:33 PM

Thanks! I had no idea.
Makes sense now.

I actually played Star Fox Adventures, and though I'm not sure how much of the final product's flaws can be blamed on Nintendo's meddling and how many were just bad choices on Rare's part, the final product remained a tedious, collection-obsessed game that played like Ocarina of Time without the fun, give or take a few obligatory flying sequences that played like Star Fox 64 without the fun or soul.

by Zanreo at 9th Jun 2015, 5:15 AM

Never played it myself, but I heard it wasn't the best, or at least, not that great for a Star Fox game.

Though I do wonder if the original Dinosaur Planet project would have had the same gameplay flaws...

this story is accurate

source: i am starfox adventures

by Zanreo at 11th Jun 2015, 8:47 AM

yes, I'm sorry to hear that

by hipopotamo at 11th Jun 2015, 8:31 AM

LOL at the flipping table emoticon!
Interesting case of executive meddling.

Understandable since StarFox was quite a franchise, but it should really have hurt Rare having to surrender their own ideas...

by Zanreo at 11th Jun 2015, 9:57 AM

Yes, Nintendo/Miyamoto got the idea since the main character of the game looked kind of like Fox, and wanted a Star Fox game on gamecube... a lot of Rare employees weren't too happy about having to change it

by NeilKapit at 18th Jun 2015, 6:11 AM

Aaand this series became particularly timely, now that Microsoft has exhumed all of Rare's old games, including many which were originally on Nintendo.

by Zanreo at 18th Jun 2015, 6:16 AM

Indeed... The E3 comic I'm working on as we speak is gonna show just what became of Rare...

"Table flip" was the best possible sound for that.

by Zanreo at 3rd Oct 2015, 6:24 PM

Indeed, I love coming up with weird "sound effects" like this :D
