Comic 150: Game Designers Studio - part 1

Yes, Game Designers Studio was the actual name of a game company. Specifically, a shell company by Square to make Final Fantasy games for Gamecube even if they had an exclusivity deal with Sony...

Well, Nintendo seems to be doing better about being nice to third parties, so there's hope for the future. Though the EU and specifically Norway are calling them out for her anti consumer practices. Though EA is the one most are focusing on, the bad behavior of all video game companies are currently under scrutiny.

Meanwhile nobody is calling out gacha games for their practices. At least I do not think so.

I am for it but it is obvious only big companies ever get called out because there are money to possibly make on all the legal dealings and whatever restrictions.

But then I guess you cannot do anything to those mobile games because they are legal on every front. However, how we define gambling then? What is allowed and what is not? CS:GO lotto was a total fiasco as well and hardly anything happened to Valve.

It’s not perfect, but here’s to hoping this gets Nintendo at least to be more consumer friendly.

I am 100% certain Activision and EA are going to try to weasel their way out of jail time. It would be nice to see the government come in and beat them over their greedy corporate heads with jail time and huge fines, but we all know that’s not going to happen.

And for those saying “let the free market handle it,” isn’t it blatantly obvious at this point that unless the government steps in and beats the gaming industry over the head with consumer protection legislation, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Take Two, Rockstar, Microsoft, and even to a lesser extant Nintendo are going to continue doing horribly anti consumer practices? This isn’t about creative freedom and freedom of speech, this is about ensuring game companies aren’t trying to prey on the weak.

Yeah, hoping this gets better...

"we all know that’s not going to happen"
Pretty much. Big corporations and jail time simply do not fit into the same sentence. Larger more important issues are never dealt with and they never face "jail time". Unless you are Enron, I guess, LMAO :D

In my opinion, it is one of the two cases.
case 1:
"Yo guys, keep it down a bit because otherwise we have to strike so people can say we actually do out job but you know, feel free to continue in some other less obvious form. There are no laws for those. Cheers!"
Virtual anything is still pretty much total legal void. Gambling, auctions, selling MMORPG items for cash and so on.

case 2:
"Ooh! Juicy targets to milk for a bit! Let's cash on a bunch of fines and call it a day!"
I mean, big corporations have enough money to pay whatever and continue their practices then and maybe pay again. Big deal.

Nintendo doesn’t have to be consumer friendly

by Zanreo at 30th Apr 2018, 10:24 AM

Yeah, it's great to see Nintendo having improved regarding this during the past years at least!

by MadJak91 at 29th Apr 2018, 8:43 PM

Huh. And what FF games were those supposed to be?

While it is impossible to say how could have a "what if" scenario ended, I think Square switching to Sony was a good, good thing.

FF7 is legendary and needed the tech. FF8 while controversial is one of my top favorite games ever. FF9 is an amazing love letter to all early FFs. FF10 kinda started the trend of Square being more cinematic and linear but it was still a solid game. FF12 was again controversial but squeezed the PS2 to the maximum. With FF13 and up it is not longer about Square and Sony anyway but general modern "standards" of AAA game making.

Speaking of such companies, I find it hilarious how Tokyo RPG Factory on Wikipedia links to Square Enix :D
I know the studio is an experiment to "revive" old school RPGs and in case something happens SE is clear but so far they have not shown much... Sigh.

Well, find out in the next part... :3

Square switching to Sony was a shit idea. They needed and actually begged Nintendo

by MadJak91 at 3rd Mar 2021, 8:40 PM

They made the N64 tech demo featuring FF6 characters (with heretically blonde Terra) and said this is what they can do but there is so much more they want to do if Nintendo improves their tech such and such. Nintendo refused to they switched to CDs and the Playstation and made FF7... and FF8... and FF9 among all the other highly regarded PS titles like Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, FF Tactics and so on.

N64 JRPGs are like... Paper Mario? That is an awesome game but it is one game. There is also Quest 64 but uh, nobody talks about Quest 64.

N64 had a lot of good and highly regarded games but we are talking JRPGs with Square and their shift with FF7 was a big loss on that front.

All of that is literally false. What actually happened is that they told Nintendo that they were going to work with Sony. Nintendo even though they were disappointed where not mad and actually wished them the best of luck. This pissed off Square because they expected them to get mad but they didn’t. So square wrongfully made hate pieces against Nintendo and insulted their company and the N64. This pissed off Nintendo who now wants nothing to do with them anymore (and rightfully so). Also Squaresoft was scummy as they were trying to convince companies like Enix to dump Nintendo and come work with Sony on the PlayStation. This was NEVER about the CDs because Square was literally against them at DAY ONE. So dude stop with the idiotic misconceptions and actually realize that Squareosft isn’t the victim here. Like I said they even BEGGED Nintendo to give them a gameboy advance license. Nintendo said yes but they said they have to make something to the GameCube first. This is literal fact. What you said was completely wrong. Nintendo never refused squat and Square didn’t care about Nintendo not using CDs in the first place. They only cared about one thing and that gave them karma for the rest of their lives and I’m glad it did. Screw Squaresoft, screw Sony, and screw all of the 3rd party devs that betrayed Nintendo just because Nintendo didn’t bend over and let the devs take advantage of them the way they want to.

Ha ha, I didn't know that Square Enix did that! That's pretty funny. I guess they wanted to cover all the bases, right?

by Zanreo at 5th May 2018, 11:00 PM

yep! (though they were still just Square at this point) couldn't let this chance go to waste...
