Comic 147: Guided Online

In 2000, when Square released Final Fantasy IX, they decided they wanted to advertise their new online portal PlayOnline in the guide... and somehow, everything actual useful ended up only available on that site. Makes the guide seem kinda useless by itself...

(Sony used only because he would likely be interested in a Final Fantasy game, not because anything Sony actually did)

I remember PlayOnline and I remember it was pretty short lived despite FF11 being a MMO. At least from I recall the service did not last long.

I had no idea they messed up their guide so much :D
People complain about Brady Guides and stuff and I guess they ARE pretty inaccurate or lazy but this is a whole different level.

Ah! I miss when back in the day freaking game manuals were sometimes like a book and contained SO much info already packed with the game. Lore, history, tips and so on.

Yeah, I was also surprised to learn this :3 at thatpoint, why not just look everything up online instead of wasting money on a guide like that?

by glmdgrielson at 26th Dec 2017, 3:23 AM

Well, at least they tried to give you tips. Imagine finding out that the 'manual' consisted entirely of "Real men don't need instruction manuals!"

by Zanreo at 26th Dec 2017, 4:01 AM

or even worse, "lol this game won't have any handholding git gud"

by MadJak91 at 27th Dec 2017, 8:42 PM

Do not even mention it, haha.
"Git gud" is the reason why I skipped the whole Souls series and as per usual, I will probably get to it years later by accident.
Or Undertale for that matter although I played similar stuff recommended to me and found it honestly superior. The game and the mentality behind it was showed down my throat so much that I tried and ran away :D

I roll my eyes at stuff with flashing arrows telling you how awesome of a job you did by pressing F when the game told you and how you now deserve 10 achievements but the opposite is also annoying.

Guh. I have this problem with my player's guide for Breath of the Wild. I don't have too much trouble finding most of the things in the vanilla game, but some of those DLC treasure chests can be real frustrating to track down. Part of the fun is finding them, but still...

by Zanreo at 8th Jan 2018, 1:32 PM

Yeah... There's always this balance between a fun challenge and frustrating for those things

Thoughts on Nintendo Labo? The trailer just dropped.

by Zanreo at 25th Jan 2018, 11:39 PM

Sure looks interesting and fun... not sure I would personally get too into it especially for that price but it's a cool idea!

by Ajax at 27th Jan 2018, 11:01 PM

I'm just annoyed by the core "gamers" who think it's for them.

It's clearly not and to say it is is wrong. That said, I think it's an innovative concept, and I think other studios might make use of that gun one that was shown for a split second in the trailer.

Happy new year! I wish there were more updates so I stopped forgetting this comic exist, it is one of my favorites!

by Zanreo at 25th Jan 2018, 11:38 PM

Thanks! And yeah... I'm hoping to get back to a better update schedule in not too long

Also, apparently Microsoft is looking into acquiring EA. Would be deliciously ironic if they shut them down too.
