Comic 135: Pirated Games?

So recently it was discovered the Virtual Console version of Super Mario Bros has some suspicious similarities to unofficial NES emulators...

Now, nothing is confirmed, but it would still make for a fun comic idea...

Well, Nintendo does have a past. Fun's just one word for it, but anyway, what I'm getting at is that it isn't necessarily all family-friendly with Nintendo, anyway.

Heh, yes, I know... Some interesting stuff happened back in the hanafuda days...

by MadJak91 at 6th Mar 2017, 9:21 PM

Oh no! At least not in the past. How many past games have you played? I emulated a lot over the years and many old RPGs or such have pretty questionable content at times :D
Then came N64 and Nintendo went the friendly route more strictly in my opinion.

Actually, it would get less restricted after those days (at least for Western-released games, Japanese Famicom games were less strict, seen some stuff on Game Center CX that never would get released in the west) since there were heavy content restrictions on NES/SNES games back in those days. This was lifted after game rating systems like ESRB and PEGI became a thing, and then they were pretty much "as long as you get a rating for the game you're good" (and now, all consoles require games released to get ratings first)

Oh, I bet! It would be a good move plus it is not like the emulator side has any right to complain about this sort of thing but then... I think emulators are legal while ROMs definitely are not. You are not making a copy of the HW, just emulating instructions and such while ROM is the actual memory on the cartridge.

What I mean is that, if you cannot fight it, do it on your own. Emulators are big. GabeN also took pirates as business partners instead!

Yeah, emulators themselves are legal and there are also people making their own games to be played on console emulators I heard...

I personally don't feel bad when it's games that went out of production long ago, especially for a console I don't even own... the devs/publishers won't make any more money from them anyway. And thing is, I WOULD buy most of them if they were available on eshop/PSN/ect...

Anybody else hearing the Final Fantasy victory theme? No? Just me? Okay then.

by Zanreo at 7th Mar 2017, 11:14 AM

Hehe, some kind of iconic theme at least

So do two wrongs make a right? Interesting topic...

by Zanreo at 7th Mar 2017, 11:15 AM

Looks like some suspicious stuff might have been going on...

by ProfEtheric at 7th Mar 2017, 5:52 AM

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo...

by Zanreo at 7th Mar 2017, 11:18 AM

Would be kinda amusing seeing how much Nintendo hates piracy...
