Comic 100: Covered Up?

So recently, there's been more ridiculous drama over a minor change... A character was moved on the boxart to avoid being too covered by the ESRB logo (which is bigger than the Japanese CERO one) and since moving this cat up put it in front of the chest of the female character above it, a character with a tiny bit of cleavage showing, this is apparently a terrible act of censorship.
...As for me, I think these people are just looking for stuff to be offended about :3

It's sad that we need these regulatory agencies, because they invariably throw their weight around and cause these sorts of problems...

by Zanreo at 10th Jun 2016, 8:39 PM

Yeah, it's weird how if the logo was in another place this could all have been avoided

by Stever at 10th Jun 2016, 7:13 PM

Sounds like they're working themselves up over nothing. XD

by Zanreo at 10th Jun 2016, 8:39 PM

Indeed x3

I love my sexy good looks.

by Zanreo at 10th Jun 2016, 10:32 PM

You're welcome :D

This creates drama like every time.
Fire Emblem Awakening is something that comes to mind and how they edited the cape in to cover a butt in bikini. Except... it looked er, even more suggestive.

I think Senran Kagura had this exact same problem but with the Nintendo sticker? Not sure.

People need to calm down. It is just a cover. They are getting their boobs inside the game anyway.

by Zanreo at 11th Jun 2016, 12:17 AM

Oh yeah, I remember that, with the covering in front it looked more like she wasn't actually wearing anything... Difference is back then, it was more of a "lol why was this even necessary?" than was quickly forgotten for the next big news, and less of a months-long outrage over localization censorship that keeps getting brought up.

Haven't heard anything about Senran Kagura? (And for a game like that, I bet I would have known if it had been because people would rage much more about it)

True, besides the localizers even STATED what was the actual reasons for the change, so...

"People need to calm down. It is just a cover. They are getting their boobs inside the game anyway. " >> This. This very much!

Covers, posters, and advertisements get a lot more scrutiny than complete works across all mediums. Note the outcry over the X-Men Apocalypse billboard with Apocalypse choking Mystique. Then again, that's a more extreme example, since this is just cleavage and not a man choking a woman.

People still look at boxart? Here I thought everybody just downloads everything these days.

by Zanreo at 14th Jun 2016, 5:37 AM

Eh, people still appreciate actual physical editions (including me)

To be fair, a couple games this year have legitimately had content censored (off the top of my head FE: Fates, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and iirc Xenoblade) so fear of further censorship is understandable. But this case is just silly.

by Zanreo at 13th Aug 2016, 10:16 PM

Well yeah, and it was the same people who complained about this, but for most of these changes, I'm kinda... neutral, really? It seemed kinda unneccesary to take it out, and if I was in charge of localization I'd probably keep them (with a few exceptions) but on the same time it's not really something I'd miss and doesn't seem like a huge deal, everything about the games considered.

Fates: Aside from the petting minigame (I wonder if that could affect the rating? somehow) there was the character story with, well, pretty unfortunate implications. So yeah, even if I don't think there was any harm intended I definitely see why that would be changed.
TMS... mostly costumes it seems. Kinda unneccesary changes but also doesn't seem like a thing to keep complaining about for months?
As for Xenoblade, yeah, they took out the boob-slider for female player characters (okay, I can kinda understand this one, since it was a part of the character creator getting removed, but with that being literally the only way other than height you could vary the character's body type... it seemed a bit weird that boobs would be the only body part you could change. It would be another thing if it had a really elaborate character creator where you could choose the shape and size of every body part) Also changed a skimpy bikini costume for a 13 year old character (this could be worn by all the female characters, and for her they made it more covering), which... honestly is understandable because she's 13.

I just miss the days when we'd just see an unneccesary censorship (like the swimsuit scene in FE: Awakening where Tharja's butt got covered (making it look more like she... wasn't wearing anything on her lower half)), laugh at how ridiculous it was for a while and then move on... rather than creating more drama than necessary over every tiny change.

by Respheal at 13th Aug 2016, 11:00 PM

Oh yeah, I definitely see both sides of the censorship debate and I'm pretty neutral as well--I just want the game dangit. The three games I brought up were specifically ones my roommate just about lost it over xD The doll->skell thing was also something he didn't like, although that's less censorship and more an audience thing. But yeah, the internet really enjoys getting upset over silly things.

Maybe I wanted to play Pokemon-Amie with Jakob okay? ;; But yeah, the other support story...ehhhhhh......

by Zanreo at 13th Aug 2016, 11:09 PM

Ah, I see xD
Doll-skell? What's that?

by Respheal at 13th Aug 2016, 11:18 PM

Ah, the mechs in Xenoblade were called Dolls in Japan, but the localization team deemed that too girly and opted to call them Skells as in exoSKELeton.

by Zanreo at 13th Aug 2016, 11:37 PM

I see, never heard of that one (guess it's not worth bringing up for months and months unless it's sexy, lol) Yeah, that's pretty uneccessary, I agree.

by junoro at 27th Sep 2016, 9:28 PM

hAHAHAH OHH MAN, that's hilarious. I can't believe that actually happened, and that it actually caused a stir! I think ESRB is making the right call by just leaving, fast.

by Zanreo at 27th Sep 2016, 11:17 PM

Sadly people will get ridiculously upset over tiny things like that (and apparently nothing actually got changed in the game, the actually important part)

by eekee at 16th Aug 2022, 11:33 PM

It's very hard to have a society with principles without people taking those principles in a completely unbalanced way. It doesn't matter whether the principle is "censorship is bad" or traditional discipline or anything else, it'll be used to hurt people by idiots imagining they're doing good.
