Game companies doing game company things | Updates currently irregular

Comic 142: Misc. Gaming News

Whew... Long time, no update! But I tried something new here - a bunch of assorted gaming news and events that has happened and that I didn't fit into a whole comic. Would you like to see more of this "format", with several things at a time?

Featuring:
- Nintendo's weird attempts at voicechat
- Konami not allowing past employees to put their work at Konami at their resume
- Atari releasing a new console, the Ataribox
- A former Valve employee releasing a "fanfic" assumed to tell the story of Half-Life 2 part 3

I am not surprised but that is a huge D-move. Even shady companies at least acknowledge you worked there or otherwise provide that info to another employer. But eh, I have read even Google is very stingy about it. It is scummy as all heck :/
Tbh, I would do it regardless. They cannot check if you make sure the new company also knows about this stupid policy.

Former Valve lead writer at that. I mean, he could have made it all up just as a prank but the date is not 1st April. I believe the script is legit even though it does not answer much at all and opens possible sequels. Which sounds hilarious when they could not even finish the one story :D

Yeah... Konami just seems to sink even lower and lower...

And yeah, the Half-Life thing seems very likely to be legit, at least people will know something more about what would happen?

Thanks for using my suggestions. Any thoughts on the new games Nintendo is releasing? Or the potential supply problems due to Apple? I've also started seeing switches in stock at places. Only one or two but they are starting to either keep ahead of the demand, which is good, or are losing demand, which is bad.

You're welcome :3 Also the new games look great, I'm really hyped for a lot of the E3 reveals :D even Mario + Rabbids look surprisingly good and I'd like to try it :3
And good to see switches back in stock, the demand still seems big from what I've seen

Sometimes, I think Nintendo reacts negatively to people attempting to give her advice, even if it is good advice because she has to deal with investors filling her ears with extremely stupid ideas 24/7

Headcanon accepted xD

Seriously, Konami? Scumbag move.
And yeah, Nintendo's audio port is a big pile of WTF. Hence why everybody just uses Discord like always.
I had no idea Atari was making a new console, though! I mean, I'm not all that into Atari myself, but I kind of like Atari the character, so I hope it gets a decent reception IRL so we can see her have a little bit of happiness in the comic.

The Ataribox looks interesting but vague. It has no cartridges and retro-emulation is not enough. Does it rely on digital distribution? Or 2nd gen cloud gaming (think LiquidSky rather than OnLive, for what that's worth)? What controllers does it use? If it goes for a feature that cuts out cartridges and disks without being proprietary, or conversely a feature that makes reselling games easier (physical or digital, especially the latter), then it could actually claw its' way to relevance. Otherwise, it looks sketchy to me.

Speaking of, the first/previous time I posted, I mentioned the Z SMACH and the PGS. I should be honest about what I have since found. Z SMACH recently lost a partnership with their originally-planned CPU provider. They were supposed to ship last April. PGS has been accused of being a scam and seems to use a lot of flowery PR-flavored responses to say otherwise; having been around for a year, I get the feeling something has gone horribly wrong or the rumors are true.

Well, it's Konami being Konami so I'm not even that surprised anymore
I also have no idea why Nintendo thought doing it through an app would be a good idea?
And yeah, I kinda hope the Ataribox does okay, if only so I'll get to use the character more...

I've heard that a lot of video game companies in Japan have had connections to the Yakuza.

Konami especially, but Nintendo for most of her life supplied gambling equipment to the Yakuza.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the issues with Konami had to do with them.

Yeah, wouldn't surprise me either... and especially regarding pachinko/gambling, so...

I also read that Nintendo occasionally had to smuggle their consoles at night to prevent them from being stolen by them.

Perhaps a comic about her earlier days and her shady dealings?
